1The Core Protocol
Mandatory Requirement
Work must be essential to your program of study.
Essentiality
You cannot use this permit just because you *want* to work. The internship must be a graded, mandatory part of your degree (e.g., Engineering Co-op).
$0 Fee
The application fee is usually waived.
2Work Rights
Hours
Authorized to work 40+ hours/week during the co-op term.
Employer
Usually closed to the specific co-op placement or institution.
Wages
Subject to provincial minimum wage laws. Unpaid is rare for formal co-ops.
3Long-Term Impact
PGWP Interaction
Does Co-op time hurt your Post-Graduation Work Permit length?
It does not shorten your PGWP. However, it also does not *count* towards the length of study if it was 50% of the program (rules are complex). Generally safe.
Express Entry (CEC)
Does Co-op experience count towards Permanent Residency points?
Work experience gained while you were a full-time student does NOT count towards the Canadian Experience Class (CEC). It helps you get a job *after* graduation, but gives no direct points.
